What Does an ADHD Assessment Actually Do?
An ADHD assessment is not simply a questionnaire or an attention test. A comprehensive assessment considers whether a longstanding pattern of attention, activity regulation, impulsivity and executive-function differences is consistent with ADHD, and whether another condition may better explain, or also contribute to, the person's experiences.
Assessment draws on clinical interview, standardised rating scales, collateral information and a careful review of the person's history across home, school, work and relationships. The aim is to build an accurate, integrated picture of the individual, not to confirm or rule out a diagnosis before the process has even begun.
"The aim is not to prove ADHD. The aim is to understand the person accurately."
A thorough assessment may consider a broad range of domains, because attention, regulation and executive-function difficulties rarely occur in isolation:
Attention & Executive Functioning: concentration, organisation, time management and working memory across settings
Emotional & Activity Regulation: impulsivity, internal restlessness, emotional regulation, sleep and health factors
Daily & Relational Functioning: home, learning, occupational and relationship functioning across life contexts
Mental Health & Co-occurring Conditions: mental health, learning difficulties and co-occurring neurodevelopmental conditions
What Is Included in an Assessment?
The specific components of an assessment are shaped by the individual's referral question, age, history and clinical presentation. No two assessments are identical, the process is tailored, not templated.
Initial Clinical Interview: understanding the person's concerns, developmental history and current functioning across home, school, work and relationships
Standardised Questionnaires: completed by the person and, where clinically appropriate, parents, partners, teachers or other informants to capture functioning across multiple settings
Review of Existing Information: previous psychological reports, school reports, medical information or other relevant records
Differential Assessment: considering whether ADHD, autism, anxiety, learning difficulties, sleep, mood or other factors may contribute, either separately or together
Clinical Interpretation & Report: information is integrated rather than interpreting one score in isolation. A written psychological report and feedback appointment with recommendations are provided
Cognitive or academic psychometric assessment may sometimes be clinically useful but is not automatically required simply to diagnose ADHD.
How Much Does an ADHD Assessment Cost?
$2,795 — Private ADHD Diagnostic Assessment
Fee correct as at August 2026. Please confirm the current fee with Redefini Therapies before booking.
What the fee reflects: The assessment fee encompasses considerably more than face-to-face testing. A comprehensive psychological assessment involves many hours of clinical work beyond the appointment itself, and it is this rigour that makes the findings meaningful and defensible:
Clinical assessment and interview time
Review of documentation and prior reports
Questionnaire administration and interpretation
Collateral information gathering
Psychometric scoring and analysis
Differential diagnostic formulation
Preparation of the written psychological report
Clinical recommendations
Feedback appointment
When considering the cost of assessment, it is worth recognising that a thorough, well-documented psychological report has ongoing value. It can inform support at school or work, guide treatment planning, and provide a clear baseline for future clinicians involved in the person's care.
Will I Get a Rebate?
Possibly, but a rebate should not be assumed. Whether Medicare or private health insurance provides a benefit depends on your individual circumstances, the specific service delivered, the referral pathway used and your policy or fund. Eligibility is not automatic, and rebates do not necessarily cover the full cost of a comprehensive private diagnostic assessment.
Medicare Pathways: Some Medicare pathways have specific age, referral type, practitioner registration and service requirements. A GP or specialist referral does not automatically guarantee a Medicare rebate for psychological assessment services. The relevant MBS item numbers and their eligibility criteria change periodically, and individual circumstances determine applicability.
Private Health Insurance: Private health funds may provide benefits for some psychology services, depending on the person's level of cover and the specific service type. Extras cover for psychology varies considerably between policies and funds. Always confirm your entitlements directly with your health fund before relying on a benefit.
Before relying on a rebate, confirm your individual eligibility with the relevant practitioner, Medicare Australia or your private health fund. Redefini Therapies can advise on what information may be relevant to your enquiry.
How Long Does It Take?
How long until I can start? Assessment availability is shaped by clinician capacity and the volume of referrals at any given time. Rather than publish a figure that may change, we prefer to give you accurate, current information when you contact us. If you are wondering whether to join a waitlist or explore assessment now, reaching out early is always worthwhile. Circumstances change, and an initial enquiry does not commit you to anything.
How long until the report is ready? Report preparation time can vary depending on the complexity of the presentation, the number of assessment components required, receipt of questionnaires from informants, school or third-party information, and whether additional assessment is clinically indicated. Your clinician will give you a realistic indication once the assessment process is underway. Rushing a report in ways that compromise its quality is not in anyone's interest.
"Fast should never be prioritised over clinically appropriate."
What If It Is Not ADHD?
This is one of the most important, and most reassuring, aspects of a comprehensive assessment. Attention, executive-function and regulation difficulties can arise from many different sources. A skilled clinician's role is to understand what is genuinely driving a person's experience, not to confirm a predetermined answer.
Assessment findings may indicate ADHD, another neurodevelopmental condition, a learning disorder, anxiety, mood difficulties, sleep-related factors, cognitive differences, or some combination of these. In some cases, a person's profile may not meet diagnostic criteria for any specific condition, and yet a good assessment still provides clinically meaningful information.
ADHD or another neurodevelopmental condition: including autism, or co-occurring profiles involving both
A learning disorder: such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or a specific learning difficulty affecting academic or occupational performance
Anxiety, mood or sleep factors: which can present with significant attention, concentration and regulation difficulties that overlap with ADHD symptoms
A complex or mixed picture: multiple co-occurring conditions, or a profile that is meaningfully different without meeting full diagnostic criteria
"What is happening, and what would genuinely support this person?" A useful assessment should always help answer this question, whatever the outcome.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
You do not need to have the diagnosis worked out before contacting us. Many families and individuals reach out feeling uncertain, unsure whether what they are noticing is significant enough, or whether assessment is the right next step at all. That is exactly what an initial conversation is for.
When you contact Redefini Therapies, it helps to have some initial information ready, but nothing needs to be formal or perfectly articulated. We are used to hearing from people at the beginning of this process.
Who the assessment is for: child, adolescent or adult, and their current age
What you are noticing: at home, school, work or in relationships, in your own words is fine
Any previous assessments: prior psychological reports, school assessments or relevant medical history
School or work concerns: whether there are specific difficulties or concerns in educational or occupational settings
"Contact our team to discuss current ADHD assessment availability and the most appropriate next step for you or your family."

Take the Next Step
If your child is struggling with attention, organisation, learning, or regulation, and you are unsure why, you do not need to determine the diagnosis yourself. That is what assessment is for. Many families find that simply having a clearer picture of their child's profile changes everything: it shifts the conversation from "why won't they just try harder?" to "now we know what actually helps."
"You bring the knowledge of your child. We bring the clinical framework. Together, we build a clearer picture."
