What is an Autism support Level Review?

An Autism Support Level Review is a clinical review of a person’s current autism support needs. It is designed to help clarify how autism is impacting everyday functioning and whether the person’s current documented autism support level continues to reflect their real-life needs.

At Redefini Therapies, our Autism Support Level Reviews focus on functional evidence. This means we look at how autism presents in real life, what supports are currently required, what barriers the person experiences, and how their needs may have changed over time.

Face-to-face or Zoom appointments

The good news is that Autism Support Level Reviews can be completed either face-to-face at Redefini Therapies or by Zoom. This means we can support clients across Australia, including families and individuals who are not located near our Brisbane clinic.

Telehealth appointments can be particularly helpful for people who find travel difficult, experience sensory overwhelm in unfamiliar environments, live regionally or remotely, or prefer to participate from the comfort of their own home.

What We Consider During a Support Level Review

Autistic support needs may differ across environments and may change over time. A person may manage independently in one setting while needing substantial support in another.

During a support-level review, Redefini psychologists consider communication, sensory needs, emotional regulation, daily living, relationships, education or employment, and participation in the community.

We consider the support and effort required for the person to function—not only what they can achieve in ideal or highly structured circumstances. Conclusions are based on the available clinical information and are not determined by one questionnaire or observation.

Why might someone need an Autism support Level Review?

An Autism Level Review may be helpful when a person already has an autism diagnosis, but their existing paperwork does not clearly explain their current support level or functional support needs.

This may be particularly relevant when preparing for an NDIS review, updating support evidence, planning therapy and intervention, clarifying school or workplace support needs, or understanding whether the person’s current documentation accurately reflects their day-to-day functioning.

Is an Autism Support Level Review a new autism diagnostic assessment?

No. An Autism Support Level Review is intended for a person who already has an autism diagnosis. It examines whether their documented support level and existing reports continue to reflect their current functioning and support needs. If a new diagnostic assessment is required, Redefini will discuss the appropriate assessment options with you.

How does Redefini approach an Autism Support Level Review?

Support level reviews are undertaken by members of Redefini’s psychology team with relevant professional expertise. In our clinical work, we help each client participate in a way that respects their communication preferences, sensory needs, pace and need for breaks. We consider the person’s functioning and support needs across relevant settings rather than relying on a single questionnaire or appointment. Our team includes registered psychologists and provisional psychologists practising under supervision.

Can an autism support level change over time?

A person’s support needs may change depending on their stage of life, environment, health, responsibilities and available supports. A review considers the person’s current functioning and whether their existing documentation accurately describes the support they now require.

What information should I provide for the review?

Redefini may request previous diagnostic and psychological reports, relevant medical or allied-health documents, NDIS plans, school or workplace information and other records that describe the person’s functioning. With consent, information may also be gathered from parents, carers, support people, schools, workplaces or other professionals.

Can an Autism Support Level Review be completed by telehealth?

Redefini offers Autism Support Level Reviews face-to-face at its Brisbane clinic or by telehealth when clinically appropriate. Telehealth may be suitable for people who live outside Brisbane, find travel difficult or feel more comfortable participating from home. Redefini will discuss whether telehealth is appropriate for your circumstances.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. Redefini provides a written report describing the person’s current presentation, functional strengths, support needs and the psychologist’s clinical opinion regarding their autism support level. The report will also include relevant recommendations based on the assessment findings.

Can the report be used for an NDIS plan reassessment?

The report may provide clinical and functional information that can be submitted as supporting evidence for an NDIS plan reassessment. However, Redefini cannot guarantee that the NDIA will accept particular recommendations, approve funding or change a participant’s plan. Please discuss evidence requirements with your support coordinator, plan manager or the NDIA.

How long does an Autism Support Level Review take?

The review generally includes an initial clinical interview, an assessment appointment, a review of relevant documents, consultation with other people where appropriate and preparation of a written report. The total timeframe varies according to the person’s needs, the information required and how quickly documents or questionnaires are returned. Some components may be completed across multiple sessions.

How much does an Autism Support Level Review cost?

The current private fee shown by Redefini is $2,599. Where NDIS funding is available and appropriate, services may be charged according to the applicable NDIS Pricing Arrangements and the work required. When eligible and included in the participant’s plan, services may be charged according to the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements. An Autism Support Level Review usually involves approximately 10 hours of professional time:

• Approximately two hours for the clinical interview

• Approximately two hours for assessment

• Approximately six hours for reviewing information, clinical interpretation, and report preparation
