Psychological Therapy and Counselling in Brisbane and via Telehealth Australia-Wide

Appointments are available in person at our Mitchelton clinic in Brisbane and via telehealth across Australia. Telehealth allows eligible clients to access psychological therapy and counselling from home using a secure video appointment. Your practitioner will discuss whether telehealth is clinically appropriate for your needs, circumstances and location.

Redefini Therapies provides individual, evidence-informed psychological therapy and counselling for children, adolescents and adults. We support people experiencing emotional, behavioural, developmental and relationship challenges, and we have particular experience supporting neurodivergent people and people with disabilities.

Our approach is neuroaffirming. This means we recognise neurological differences—including ADHD, autism and learning differences—as natural forms of human diversity. Therapy is not focused on making someone appear less neurodivergent or suppressing harmless traits. Instead, we work collaboratively to understand the person’s strengths, needs, communication preferences and lived experience. Therapy may support self-understanding, emotional regulation, relationships, self-advocacy and participation in everyday life.

Our practice is also trauma-informed. We understand that past and current experiences can affect a person’s sense of safety, trust, relationships and wellbeing. We prioritise emotional and physical safety, choice, collaboration and respect. Therapy is paced according to the individual’s needs, and clients are supported to maintain control over their goals and participation.

Therapy is tailored to each person. Depending on their goals and what is clinically appropriate, our practitioners may draw on approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, psychodynamic approaches and family systems therapy.

What to expect

Before your first appointment, we may ask you to:

  • Complete the relevant intake and consent forms.

  • Review our privacy, confidentiality and fee information.

  • Provide any relevant referral letters or previous reports.

  • Let us know about communication, accessibility, sensory or other adjustments that may help you feel comfortable.

  • Bring your Medicare card and referral if you plan to claim a Medicare rebate.

Relevant documents can be emailed to admin@redefini.com.au before your appointment.

Stage 1: Getting to know you

Your first session is an opportunity for your practitioner to learn about you, your current concerns, strengths, experiences and goals. You can also ask questions and discuss what would help you feel safe and comfortable during therapy.

We recognise that communication and participation may look different for each person. You are welcome to tell us about any communication, sensory, accessibility, cultural or other needs you would like us to consider. Where appropriate and with your consent, information from parents, carers or other relevant professionals may also help us understand how best to support you.

Stage 2: Collaborative goal setting and therapy planning

You and your practitioner will work together to identify what you would like support with and develop goals that are meaningful to you. Your therapy plan will be tailored to your strengths, needs, preferences and circumstances and may be adjusted as therapy progresses.

If you are an NDIS participant, your NDIS goals may be considered as part of therapy planning when relevant. Therapy remains guided by your individual clinical needs, choices and informed consent.

Stage 3: Individualised therapy

Therapy sessions are tailored to your goals, strengths, needs and preferred ways of communicating and participating. Your practitioner will use approaches that are appropriate to you and will explain the purpose of the strategies used.

Therapy is collaborative and flexible. You can ask questions, provide feedback, request adjustments or discuss changing the pace or direction of therapy at any time. Your goals and progress will be reviewed regularly to ensure therapy continues to be meaningful and helpful.

Stage 4: Reviewing progress and ending therapy

You and your practitioner will regularly review your goals and discuss whether therapy continues to meet your needs. Therapy may conclude when your goals have been met, when you choose to finish, or when another type of support would be more appropriate.

Where possible, ending therapy will be planned collaboratively and at a pace that supports a safe transition. Your practitioner may help you identify helpful strategies, personal and community supports, and options for future care. Any referrals or information sharing will occur with your knowledge and consent.

Areas We May Support

Redefini Therapies provides evidence-informed, neuroaffirming and trauma-informed psychological therapy and counselling. Support is tailored to each person’s age, goals, strengths, communication preferences, lived experience and circumstances.

The approaches used may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, psychodynamic approaches, family systems therapy and psychoeducation. The most appropriate approach is selected collaboratively and may change as therapy progresses.

ADHD Support

Therapy may help children, adolescents and adults understand their ADHD, recognise their strengths and develop practical strategies for emotional regulation, organisation, motivation and daily functioning.

Support may include psychoeducation, adapted CBT, ACT and collaborative strategies for parents and families. Therapy is not intended to make a person appear less neurodivergent. It focuses on supporting wellbeing, self-understanding, self-advocacy and participation in everyday life.

Autism and Neurodivergence

Our neuroaffirming approach recognises autism and other neurological differences as natural forms of human diversity. We do not aim to suppress harmless traits, discourage appropriate self-regulation or make someone appear less autistic.

Therapy may support self-understanding, emotional wellbeing, communication preferences, sensory needs, relationships, self-advocacy and managing stressful or inaccessible environments. Therapeutic strategies are adapted to the individual rather than expecting the person to adapt to a standard model of therapy.

Anxiety and Stress

Therapy may help people understand anxiety, recognise patterns that contribute to distress and develop more helpful ways of responding to difficult thoughts, emotions and situations.

Depending on the person’s needs, therapy may draw on CBT, ACT, psychoeducation and collaboratively planned behavioural strategies. The pace and goals of therapy are adjusted to the individual.

Depression and Low Mood

Support may focus on understanding the factors contributing to low mood, reconnecting with meaningful activities and developing more helpful ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions.

Therapy may draw on CBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy and other appropriate psychological approaches.

Emotional Regulation

Therapy can support people to recognise emotions, understand triggers and develop personalised ways to communicate and manage distress.

Emotional regulation strategies are adapted to the person’s developmental, sensory, communication and neurodivergent needs. The goal is not to eliminate emotions but to help the person understand and respond to them safely.

Trauma-Related Difficulties

Our trauma-informed approach prioritises safety, trust, choice, collaboration and personal control. We recognise that past and current experiences can affect a person’s wellbeing, relationships, sense of safety and ability to participate in therapy.

Therapy is paced according to the individual’s needs. A person will not be expected to discuss traumatic experiences before they feel ready. The treatment used will depend on the person’s presentation and the practitioner’s relevant training and scope of practice.

Grief, Loss and Life Transitions

Therapy can provide a supportive space to process grief, loss and significant changes in a person’s life.

Approaches may include narrative therapy, ACT and other person-centred strategies that respect the individual’s relationships, values, culture and way of making meaning from their experiences.

Self-Esteem, Shame and Self-Criticism

Therapy may help people understand how patterns of shame or self-criticism developed and build a more compassionate and balanced understanding of themselves.

Support may draw on CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, psychoeducation and strengths-based approaches.

Anger and Behaviours of Concern

We work to understand the emotions, unmet needs, communication difficulties, sensory experiences and environmental factors that may be contributing to behaviour.

Therapy may support emotional awareness, communication, problem-solving and safer ways of responding to distress. We avoid describing behaviour as a problem without considering what the behaviour may be communicating.

Relationships, Boundaries and Assertiveness

Therapy may help people better understand relationship patterns, communicate their needs, establish healthy boundaries and manage conflict.

Depending on the person’s needs, approaches may include family systems therapy, narrative therapy, CBT and communication-focused strategies.

Bullying

Therapy may help individuals process the emotional effects of bullying, strengthen self-advocacy and develop strategies for safety and support.

Where appropriate, and with the client’s knowledge and consent, therapy may include collaboration with parents, carers, schools or other important supports.

Sleep Difficulties

Therapy may explore behavioural, emotional, environmental and sensory factors that are affecting sleep.

Support may include psychoeducation and individually tailored strategies. Medical concerns or persistent sleep difficulties may require assessment or treatment from an appropriately qualified medical or sleep professional.

Procrastination and Motivation

Therapy may help identify factors contributing to task avoidance, including anxiety, executive functioning difficulties, perfectionism, overwhelm or low mood.

CBT, ACT and motivational interviewing may be used to develop realistic strategies that connect with the person’s needs, values and goals.

Obsessive-Compulsive Difficulties

Therapy may support people experiencing intrusive thoughts, distress and repetitive behaviours. Treatment will depend on the person’s individual needs and the practitioner’s relevant qualifications and experience.

When specialised treatment is required, we may recommend referral to an appropriately trained clinician or service.

Learning Differences and Disability-Related Support

Therapy does not aim to remove a learning difference, disability or neurodivergent identity.

Instead, therapy may support self-understanding, emotional wellbeing, confidence, self-advocacy and adjustment to challenges at school, work or in daily life. Practical accommodations and collaboration with relevant supports may also be discussed.

Support for Parents, Carers and Families

Parents, carers and family members may receive support to better understand a person’s needs, strengthen communication and respond to difficulties in respectful, neuroaffirming and trauma-informed ways.

Family systems approaches, psychoeducation and collaborative problem-solving may be used where appropriate.

Choosing the Right Therapeutic Approach

The approaches used will depend on the client’s needs, goals and preferences, the practitioner’s qualifications and experience, and whether Redefini Therapies is the most appropriate service.

Therapy is collaborative. Clients can ask questions, provide feedback and discuss changing the pace, goals or direction of therapy at any time. If another practitioner or service would be more appropriate, we will discuss possible referral options with you. No particular treatment or outcome can be guaranteed.

How We Tailor Therapy in Practice

At Redefini Therapies, the therapeutic approach is adjusted according to the client’s goals, preferences, communication style, developmental needs and response to therapy.

Our practitioners consider whether the pace, language, sensory environment and therapeutic activities are accessible to the individual. Clients can ask questions, provide feedback and request changes or adjustments.

We recognise that progress looks different for everyone. Therapy goals are reviewed collaboratively and are based on what is meaningful to the client, rather than on conformity to a standard idea of behaviour or functioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can access therapy at Redefini Therapies?

Redefini Therapies provides psychological therapy and counselling for children, adolescents and adults. We have particular experience supporting neurodivergent people, people with disabilities, and their families and carers. The most appropriate practitioner will depend on the person’s age, needs, goals and preferred appointment type.

Who provides therapy at Redefini?

Therapy is provided by a clinician whose qualifications, professional scope and experience are suited to the client’s needs. Redefini’s team includes registered psychologists, provisional psychologists practising under supervision, and counsellors. In our clinical work, we help each client develop collaborative goals and adapt the therapeutic approach, communication, pace and environment to their individual circumstances. The clinician and service options available will be discussed before therapy begins.

Do I need a referral?

You do not usually need a referral to book a private psychology or counselling appointment.

If you would like to claim a Medicare rebate for eligible psychology appointments, you will need a valid referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from an appropriate medical practitioner. Please confirm your eligibility with your referring practitioner or Medicare.

Do you offer telehealth therapy?

Yes. Redefini Therapies offers telehealth psychology and counselling appointments across Australia, subject to practitioner availability and clinical suitability.

Telehealth allows you to attend a secure video appointment from home. Your practitioner will discuss whether telehealth is appropriate for your age, needs, circumstances and location.

Is therapy available in person?

Yes. In-person appointments are available at the Redefini Therapies clinic in Mitchelton, Brisbane. Telehealth appointments are also available for clients throughout Australia.

What does neuroaffirming therapy mean?

Neuroaffirming therapy recognises neurological differences—including autism, ADHD and learning differences—as natural forms of human diversity.

At Redefini Therapies, therapy does not focus on making someone appear less neurodivergent or suppressing harmless traits. We work collaboratively to support self-understanding, emotional wellbeing, communication preferences, sensory needs, relationships, self-advocacy and meaningful participation in everyday life.

What does trauma-informed therapy mean?

Trauma-informed therapy recognises that past and current experiences may affect a person’s sense of safety, trust, relationships and wellbeing.

Redefini Therapies prioritises safety, choice, collaboration, respect and personal control. Therapy is paced according to the individual’s needs, and clients will not be expected to discuss traumatic experiences before they feel ready.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Therapy is tailored to each client. Depending on the person’s needs, preferences and goals—and the practitioner’s qualifications and experience—approaches may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, psychodynamic approaches, family systems therapy and psychoeducation.

Your practitioner will explain the approaches they recommend and invite you to ask questions or provide feedback.

What happens during the first appointment?

The first appointment is an opportunity for your practitioner to learn about your current concerns, strengths, experiences and goals. You can ask questions and discuss what would help you feel safe and comfortable during therapy.

You are welcome to let Redefini know about any communication, sensory, accessibility, cultural or other adjustments you may require.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

The number and frequency of appointments will depend on your needs, goals, circumstances and response to therapy. Some people seek short-term support, while others may benefit from therapy over a longer period.

You and your practitioner will review your goals and progress regularly. No particular number of sessions or treatment outcome can be guaranteed.

Can parents, carers or family members be involved?

Parents, carers or family members may be involved when appropriate and with consideration of the client’s age, preferences, consent and privacy.

Their involvement might include providing relevant background information, participating in collaborative planning or learning strategies to support the person outside therapy.

Can I use NDIS funding for therapy?

NDIS funding may be available when the requested support is included in your plan, meets current NDIS funding requirements and Redefini Therapies can provide the service under your funding arrangements.

Availability and payment processes may differ depending on whether your plan is self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. Please contact Redefini before booking to confirm whether your funding arrangement can be accepted.

Does therapy include an ADHD, autism or cognitive assessment?

Therapy and diagnostic assessment are different services. Attending therapy does not automatically include a diagnosis or formal diagnostic report.

Redefini Therapies provides separate diagnostic assessment services for ADHD, autism, intellectual and cognitive functioning, and specific learning difficulties. Please visit our Diagnostic Assessments and Pricing page or contact our team to discuss the appropriate service.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Redefini Therapies respects your privacy and handles personal information according to applicable professional, privacy and legal requirements.

Your practitioner will explain confidentiality and its limits, including circumstances where information may need to be shared because of serious safety concerns or legal obligations. You are welcome to ask questions about privacy before sharing information.

What if Redefini is not the appropriate service for me?

The suitability of therapy depends on your needs and whether an available practitioner has the appropriate qualifications, experience and capacity.

If Redefini Therapies is not the most appropriate service, we will discuss this with you and may suggest seeking support from another suitably qualified practitioner or service.
