What is actually included in an autism assessment?

Autism Assessment Is More Than One Test
There is no single questionnaire, observational task, or score that independently establishes autism. A comprehensive diagnostic assessment is not a pass-or-fail moment. It is a careful, clinician-led process that looks at the whole person across time and context.
A comprehensive assessment brings together multiple streams of evidence:
History & Experience: developmental history, lived experience, behaviour across settings
Communication & Interaction: communication style, social interaction, sensory experiences
Patterns & Routines: interests, routines and predictability, adaptive functioning
Clinical Process: standardised measures, clinical observation, differential diagnosis
"The clinician interprets the whole pattern, not any single test result in isolation."
Developmental History
Autism is neurodevelopmental. Its characteristics have been present since early in a person's life, even if not identified at the time. Assessment explores Early Years, School & Learning, Sensory & Routines, and Independence, building a rich, contextualised understanding rather than assigning blame.
For adults, childhood information can still be clinically useful even when formal records are limited. Memory, family recollections, school reports, and lived narrative all contribute.
Standardised Assessment Tools
Where clinically appropriate, standardised autism-specific tools contribute structured, consistent evidence, but they do not replace developmental history, clinical judgement, context, differential diagnosis, or understanding of the individual.
"Assessment tools contribute evidence. They do not, and cannot, replace the clinician's understanding of the whole person."
What Else Do We Consider?
Autism rarely exists in isolation. Assessment also considers co-occurring conditions:
Neurodevelopmental: ADHD, intellectual disability, learning and language disorders
Mental Health: anxiety, mood conditions, impacts of trauma
Sensory & Other Differences: sensory processing and perceptual experiences
"What combination of factors best explains this person's experiences and support needs?"
A Neuroaffirming Assessment
Neuroaffirming practice respects autonomy, communication styles, and lived experience, without overlooking genuine disability or minimising real support needs. This includes recognising Strengths, Autonomy & Identity, Context & Environment, and honest Support Needs.
"We can recognise disability without defining the person by their deficits."
What Do I Receive?
At the end of the process, you receive more than a diagnostic label:
Clinical Assessment: developmental history, standardised measures, observation
Scoring & Interpretation: careful analysis in full context
Diagnostic Formulation: clinician-led, addressing the referral question
Written Psychological Report: explains reasoning, includes individualised recommendations
Feedback Appointment: a dedicated session to discuss findings
