Adult Psychological Assessments Guide
Adult Psychological Assessments Guide
Psychological assessments help us better understand a person's strengths, challenges, support needs, and day-to-day functioning. Adults may seek a psychological assessment for many reasons — from diagnostic clarification and treatment planning, to NDIS evidence, workplace accommodations, or simply a deeper understanding of how they think, feel, and function in daily life.
At Redefini, assessment is approached respectfully, collaboratively, and with a focus on understanding the whole person. This guide explains what a psychological assessment involves, what to expect at each stage, and how the process may support you.
Understanding Psychological Assessment
Every day, adults are required to process information, solve problems, manage responsibilities, regulate attention and emotions, communicate with others, complete daily living tasks, and participate in work, study, family life, relationships, and the broader community. At times, a person may notice that some of these areas feel difficult, inconsistent, overwhelming, or more effortful than expected.
Psychological assessment can help identify why this may be occurring and what supports may be helpful. It is not about identifying what is "wrong" with a person. Rather, it provides a structured and evidence-informed way to understand a person's individual profile — including their strengths, differences, vulnerabilities, coping patterns, functional capacity, and support needs.
What Can a Psychological Assessment Explore?
Depending on the referral question, a psychological assessment may cover a wide range of domains. Assessment tools are always selected based on the individual's needs, background, and the specific questions being explored. The outcome is a detailed strengths-and-challenges profile that may assist the person, their family, treating professionals, workplaces, educational providers, support coordinators, or funding bodies.

The Assessment Process: Step by Step
The assessment process at Redefini is structured across three key stages. Each stage has a specific purpose and is designed to ensure the assessment is thorough, evidence-informed, and meaningful. The process is collaborative — your input, history, and lived experience are central throughout.
The overall process from initial interview to completion of the report is approximately 10 to 12 weeks in most cases.
Step 1: Diagnostic Interview — The first appointment is a diagnostic interview or intake session, typically lasting 1 to 2 hours.
Step 2: Testing and Evaluation — The testing phase is tailored to the individual. Assessment tools are selected based on the referral question and the person's needs.
Step 3: Feedback Session — Once all information has been gathered, scored, interpreted, and integrated, you will attend a feedback session lasting 1 to 2 hours.
